Reading Notes, More Jataka Tales: The Stupid Monkeys

There once was a king that gave a holiday to all the people in his city. His gardener was aware of this holiday, especially because all of his friends were going to the city to celebrate it, and he thought about going but he knew that he was responsible for watering the trees in the king's garden. Then, he had the idea of asking the monkeys that lived in the garden to water the trees. He went to the Chief of the Monkeys and he asked them to water the trees so that he could go away for the holiday and the Chief agreed. The gardener instructed them to water the trees when the sun went down and to water them enough but to not over water them. The monkeys watered the trees and the Chief told them to check to see if they had watered them enough, but they did not know how so the Chief told them to pull up each tree and water the ones that had short roots and stop watering the ones that had long roots. All of the monkeys did exactly that and the gardener came back to a garden full of dead trees.
